Diagnosis for Food Poisoning

The diagnosis for food poisoning depends upon its type and severity of infection. In normal cases patients recover in 2 to 3 days and no diagnosis is carried out but in severe cases following tests are taken to start treating food poisoning.

1- Blood Test

2- Stool Test

3- Lumber Puncture

4- Imaging Techniques

1- Blood Test

This is basic test in which the presence of any infectious organism in patient’s blood is verified. On the basis of its results further tests or treatment is carried out.

2- Stool Test

Stool test further facilitates the process of identifying the type and severity of infection caused by specific bacteria or virus.

3- Lumber Puncture

This test is recommended for those patients whose nervous system got damaged by food poisoning. In this test a sample of cerebrospinal fluid (CFC) is taken out with the help of a needle inserted in spinal cord of patient. This test explains the presence of bacteria in brain area and severity of damage caused by them.

4- Imaging Techniques

Imaging Techniques including CT (Computerized Tomography) scan and MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) can also be used to take the cross sectional images of inner body parts. Treatment of food poisoning can be facilitated on the basis of images obtained by these imaging techniques
