Explaining this is a bit tricky and you may think that we mean the opposite of what we are saying, but we assure you that there is nothing wrong with the following statement. The sun is farthest from Earth in July and closest in January. It is true that the temperature on Earth depends on the sun’s distance, but a more important factor is the angle under which the sun’s rays hit Earth. In winter, the rays are spread across a bigger area and don’t produce enough heat, while in the summer they are focused on a certain area and deliver more heat.
